Phillies' Larry Bowa goes volcanic, gets ejected as benches nearly clear vs. Mets

Things got pretty tense between the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. It was another one of those weird “unwritten rules” things involving Mets relief pitcher Hansel Robles that resulted in Phillies bench coach Larry Bowa getting tossed.

With Darin Ruf in the batter’s box, Robles quick-pitched, which no one in the Phillies dugout was too pleased about– particularly Jeff Francouer and Larry Bowa.

Bowa charged out of the dugout to give home plate umpire Dan Bellino a piece of his mind, and was subsequently ejected.

“That was chicken (expletive),” Francoeur said after the game. “My whole point was let the guy get in the box. If they can’t understand why I was upset about that …

“I’ve got no problem with the way any of those guys play. They play hard. They’re a great baseball team and I’ve got a lot of good buddies on the team. My whole thing was give the guy time to pitch because that’s bull.”

Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud agreed Robles shouldn’t have thrown the pitch.

“I just know the guy’s head was down I think the rule is you can’t throw it until at least they’re looking at him. So I was telling him to wait,” d’Arnaud said. “He threw it. You never know what could happen in that situation when you’re looking down and something like that happens.”

Robles, the man in question, told his side of the story: “I saw the batter get into the box and the umpire pointed to him and I was ready to execute my pitch.”

Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s skipper seemed to have no clue what was going on:
