Who Is WWE Star Daria Berenato's Wife? All About Toni Cassano

Daria Berenato may be known for her tough persona, but she’s a hopeless romantic in real life.

The MMA and WWE superstar (known by the ring name Sonya Deville) wed her wife, Toni Cassano, on Feb. 10, 2024. Their union came just one year after Berenato proposed and two years after they started dating.

During a June 2023 appearance on Maria Menounos' Heal Squad podcast, the wrestler revealed it was love at first sight when she first came across Cassano on social media.

“I would look at this woman’s page and I was just like, ‘She’s wifey,” she recalled. “Everything I’ve always wanted and needed is in this woman.”

That feeling only intensified after she and Cassano met in person in April 2022. “I found my best friend, my soul mate and my life partner all in one incredible human. She is the epitome of my ride or die,” Berenato told PEOPLE after their engagement.

In 2015, Berenato made headlines when she publicly came out on the reality competition show Tough Enough, making her the WWE’s first openly gay female wrestler.

The revelation was unplanned but ultimately served as a confidence boost. “I wasn’t a hundred percent comfortable with myself and my sexuality at the time,” she told PEOPLE, explaining that she was “kind of put on the spot” when asked about her relationship status on the show. Without having time to prepare, she made the snap decision to tell the truth.

Continuing, she called the experience “the best thing that ever happened to me,” saying it led to greater self-acceptance. “It probably would have taken me years to come to that level of openness.”

Now, the WWE star is using her platform to inspire others. "It's been really cool for me personally to be able to become more comfortable with myself, while sharing that journey with everyone watching,” she told Out Magazine in March 2023. "I want women to watch what we do and [think they] can do anything.”

Cassano agreed, telling the outlet, “The more we can put it out there to fully be accepting of whoever you really feel like you are ... I think that's a really important thing for us to help get across to the younger generation," she added.

She’s a fitness model

Cassano is a fitness model, trainer and influencer. In 2021, she was a contestant in the NPC Ultimate Physique Championships, a bodybuilding, figure and bikini competition. She has worked as a CrossFit trainer and frequently shares workouts and clean eating tips on her social media.

On top of that, she developed KidFit, an at-home child weight loss and fitness program to teach parents and children the importance of proper nutrition and exercise.

She’s a mom of two

Working with children comes naturally for Cassano, who is also a mom of two. The fitness influencer has two daughters, Giovanna and Valentina, from a previous relationship.

During the couple's joint interview on Heal Squad in 2023, Cassano admitted that she didn't know anything about the WWE before meeting Berenato but has come to appreciate the sport — as have her kids!

“I think it’s so cool [and] the kids are so into it,” she said, adding, “Now my older one wants to be a wrestler.”

According to Berenato, Cassano's daughters frequently come to WWE matches to cheer her on. "That’s the coolest part," Berenato said on the podcast. “That’s the best feeling I think I’ve had in the ring."

They met through Instagram

Berenato and Cassano started dating in April 2022, but their first interaction came through social media. Before meeting in real life, they followed one another on Instagram for several years.

"I had this huge crush on her,” Cassano said on the Heal Squad podcast.

She was in a relationship at the time but revealed that she reached out to the pro-wrestler as soon as she was single. In response, Berenato asked her out, inviting her to an upcoming WWE show.

“I got her a front-row ticket to my show, and I was going to take her out to dinner after,” Berenato told PEOPLE. “But I didn't have time to meet her before the show, so the first time I ever saw Toni was when I was coming out doing my entrance ready to wrestle and I looked into the crowd.”

Unfortunately, Berenato didn’t get in the ring until after 10 p.m., so by the time her performance ended, they’d missed their dinner reservation and went to a bar instead. Nevertheless, they ended up having a perfect first date.

Berenato knew she was the one right away

Speaking to PEOPLE after their engagement, Berenato revealed she felt a spark of connection immediately after meeting Cassano.

“This is going to sound really cheesy, but I knew [she was the one] the second I saw her,” she said.

Berenato felt the same way after their first date, too, telling PEOPLE, "I was instantly like, 'This girl is the love of my life.' She just had the most grounded, cool energy and just was so beautiful, but you could tell she doesn't know it. She's just so cool and humble, and I was just like, 'This is my girl.' "

They’ve collaborated on fitness and real estate projects  

Berenato and Cassano share a love of fitness, real estate and entrepreneurship.

“Toni and I are very similar in a lot of ways,” Berenato explained on the Heal Squad podcast. “She’s very headstrong, she’s very independent, she has always worked and hustled and supported herself. That’s something that I obviously admired about her when I first met her.”

And with that admiration came collaboration. In June 2022, the pair teamed up to create an online fitness program called the 4-week Train Like an Athlete Challenge. They’ve also ventured into the real estate business together.

When they met, Berenato had already started acquiring rental properties. After learning that Cassano, who previously worked as a real estate agent, was equally interested in the housing market, they decided to try their hands at flipping the properties.

“We tried house flipping, and that’s been fun,” Berenato shared, before adding, “and now we’re looking to open a pizza business.”

They got engaged in February 2023

On Feb. 15, 2023, Berenato popped the question at a wine cellar in New Jersey. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, she shared details about their romantic engagement.

After spending months designing a custom ring with Happy Jewelers, she asked Cassano to marry her, getting down on one knee in front of their friends and family. To her surprise, Cassano was ready with an engagement ring of her own.

“I proposed, then Toni's like, ‘Grab my purse.’ And she pulls out a freaking ring box, and she's like, ‘I've been carrying this around in my purse for four months. So, whenever you proposed, I could give you a ring immediately back,' " the wrestler said.

Berenato went on to say it was important for her to include Cassano’s kids in the moment. “I’ve never proposed to a woman before and I wanted this to be the most special for Toni and her kids too,” she shared. While she made sure to involve her soon-to-be stepdaughters, she still wanted them to be somewhat surprised. “I wanted them to have a memorable moment too.”

“To be able to show her and her two daughters how much they all mean to me was what this proposal was all about,” she continued. “They are my world and now we are one family forever together."

They wed in February 2024

Nearly a year after getting engaged, Berenato and Cassano got married on Feb. 10, 2024 in New Jersey. They hosted their wedding at The Legacy Castle, with 140 loved ones — including fellow wrestlers like Charlotte Flair, Montez Ford and Bianca Belair as well as WWE commentator Vic Joseph. Menounos officiated the ceremony.

“I think we have two and a half tables or three tables of just WWE people," Berenato told PEOPLE ahead of the wedding. "We have our neighbors coming and old family friends, and so it's like this big wrestler next to my little neighbor. There's going to be some funny pairings there.”

Guests wore black while the brides and Cassano's two daughters dressed in all-white.

“I didn’t want to wear a traditional, buttoned-up tuxedo or a dress,” said Berenato. “I wanted an outfit!"
