(Ivan Calderon in photo) 24.08.07 – By Jorge Guerrero: Unbeaten WBO strawweight champion Ivan Calderon (28-0, 6 KOs) weighed in at 107 lbs for his battle tomorrow night against Junior flyweight champion (108 lbs) Hugo Cazares (25-3-1, 19 KOs) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Calderon, 32, is moving up in weight to take on Cazares, 29, the WBO junior flyweight boxing champion. Cazares is widely considered to be the best fight in the junior flyweight division, and with his knockout power and six inch size advantage, he’s going to have a definite advantage over Calderon.
For his part, Calderon, a former 2000 Olympian representing Puerto Rico in the light flyweight class, is also considered the best in his weight class, the strawweight division. Although he doesn’t have much power, he has exceptional boxing skills and often knocks down his opponents several times during his bouts.
He’s southpaw, and mostly fights going backwards where he likes to counter punch, making his opponents look bad. Calderon especially enjoys fighting opponents with huge knockout records, like Cazares, with whom he outboxes with his slick style. He admits, he doesn’t care one bit about knockouts, preferring to box. Despite his superiority at 105, he’s moving up to face Cazares for the bigger money in the 108 lbs weight class.
